SOMETHING OLD by Julia Quinn'Something Old' is a quick prologue (basically one chapter) which takes place in 1818 England, and tells how four teenage friends who attend Madame Rochambeaux's Gentle School for Girls discover a hundred-year-old sixpence they hope is lucky and will aid them in finding their future husbands. It also gives a little background with regards to ages, family history, and how each girl ended up at the boarding school. Although really short, I found it very endearing and by the time I finished I couldn't wait to watch Anne, Cordelia, Elinor and Beatrice all find their true loves =)SOMETHING NEW by Stefanie Sloane - 3 Stars***'Something New' takes place almost ten years later in London and has Miss Anne Brabourne unexpectedly befriending Rhys Hamilton, the Duke of Dorset, during his aunt's ball. She needs to marry in a hurry, and he offers to help her in her search of the perfect husband... Right away I was distracted by a discrepancy with Anne's age which threw me off and had me going back to the prologue and checking what I'd previously read. While I liked both Anne and Rhys and I thought their romance was sweet, this was my least favorite of the bunch. I did enjoy the author's writing and there were some charming characters, however, I felt like the story was short on plot as there's ultimately nothing really keeping these two apart. Then there was the ending with its obligatory sex scene which I thought was rather unnecessary. Overall this one was just okay.SOMETHING BORROWED by Elizabeth Boyle - 5 Stars*****'Something Borrowed' picks up less than a week before the wedding of Anne and her Duke. Cordelia has just received the lucky coin and finds herself in a fix. To avoid a trio of matchmaking aunts she invented a fake betrothed and now needs to 'borrow' a fiancee for the upcoming wedding. Who better than her childhood friend Kipp, except he's now an Earl and about to propose to another woman... I loved Cordelia who was so full of zest and life and who brought Kipp back to life too. All the characters practically jumped off the pages, including Cordie's companion and Kipp's brother. This story made me laugh, smile, and simply melted my heart. The romance was both tender and passionate and beautifully written. There was also a nice surprise at the end which I didn't see coming. All in all I thought it was a true joy to read and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Boyle soon!SOMETHING BLUE by Laura Lee Guhrke - 4 Stars****'Something Blue' takes place a few hours after the wedding of Cordelia to her Earl. Lady Elinor Daventry needs the coins luck to make an advantageous marriage. Then its stolen by Lawrence Blackthorne, her former fiancee and the man intent on proving her father guilty of treason... I really liked this story which was well written and had a bit of a mystery to it. I adored Ellie whose loyalty to her father was admirable, and even Lawrence, whose honor and duty cost him the woman he loved. Although it was a bit more angsty than I prefer, it was nonetheless an engaging and heartfelt read. I loved seeing these two get their second chance at love, and watching the sparks they created whenever they were together. There is one sex scene but I thought it was an emotional and lovely reunion. In the end I enjoyed it and found it intriguing and compelling....AND A SIXPENCE IN HER SHOE by Julia Quinn - 5 Stars*****This story picks up immediately following the wedding of Elinor and Lawrence. After a bit of cajoling by her friends Beatrice Heywood accepts the coin, even finishing off the rhyme by putting it in her shoe. Then fate suddenly throws her into the path of the damaged Lord Frederick Grey-Osborne... I pre-ordered this book because of Julia Quinn since I always hope for a little of her old Bridgerton magic. Although this was the shortest story in the collection (besides the prologue) it was written with charm, wit, and heart. I found Bea's enthusiasm and joy for astronomy contagious, and loved seeing her bring light back to Frederick's life. The declarations he makes at the end were utterly beautiful and literally brought tears to my eyes. This was the only story without a sex scene, but honestly it didn't need one. It was a touching and lovely romance all on its own, and an absolute joy to read! I had this one on my wish list for a while and when it came down in price, I immediately bought it. I read it a few days ago and I'm only doing the review today. My single overwhelming memory of the book is +++Spoiler+++ that the H in the first story takes the h up against a wall. This is how a gently bred girl loses her virginity. Honestly, it was so jarring and so out of keeping with the rest of the story. I have no idea why the authors felt that these scenes were necessary in 3 out of the 4 stories. They're hard to manage in short stories and I didn't they were particularly good either. Sadly, in order to do my review, I had to go back to each story to try and remember what they were about and for these reasons I'm only giving this anthology 3 stars. The premise of the anthology is that four girls who are together at school, find a sixpence in a mattress on one of their beds. They think it will bring them romance and marriage. Each girl has a turn with the sixpence until they marry. Now to the stories themselves:Something New - Stefanie SloaneI've never read this author before and her claim to fame is the sex scene mentioned above. The story was quite sweet until that part near the end. The h has been given until her 21st birthday to find a suitable man to marry. She's already had several seasons but not made a match. She comes across the H one evening after she'd been talking to his dog in the library. Unknown to the h, the H had been there all along and had heard her conversation with his dog. The H is a duke and not interested in marriage but he agrees to help her find a suitable gentleman. The rest is history and as I say it was quite a sweet story.Something Borrowed - Elizabeth BoyleThe h in this story has fabricated a fiancé to keep her aunts from pestering her about marriage. She is also now in possession of the sixpence and has to go to a houseparty with a fiancé in tow. She remembers the H from her childhood and when she comes across him again, she asks him to pose as her fiancé. He agrees to go with her, even though he was on the verge of proposing to an heiress so that he could get the money he needs to restore the fortunes of the earldom he's inherited. This one too has a rushed sex scene and I was left wondering why the author bothered.Something Blue - Laura Lee GuhrkeI'm not a fan of this author and I didn't like this story. It's a "second chance" story about a pair who were in love before they fell out over a scandal involving the h's father. The whole time I was reading it, I was just irritated. Irritated by the squabbling between this pair. Irritated by the premise which seemed impossible to work out. If the H convicts her father then the h would hate him forever and her family name would be ruined. If the H was wrong, then how could the h ever forgive him? It was a quandary and I'm not entirely satisfied with the way it all worked out. Needless to say there was that last minute sex scene in this one too.And a Sixpence in her Shoe - Julia QuinnThis was the last story, as well as the sweetest story and it was clean. On the whole, this one made the anthology. The last unmarried girl of the group to get the sixpence but this h doesn't want to marry because she needs to take care of her aunts. She and the H literally bump into each other one day and that sparks a friendship between the two. The H is a younger son of a marquess, who has lost the use of one of his eyes in a carriage accident. He wears an eyepatch but he's still good looking. The H is into Physics and the h has a keen interest in Astronomy. It's such a lovely story and redeemed the bundle.
