Ebook About
On June 23, 1911—a summer day so magnificent it seems as if God himself has smiled on the town—Fall River, Massachusetts, is reveling in its success. The Cotton Centennial is in full swing as Joseph Bartlett takes his place among the local elite in the parade grandstand. The meticulously planned carnival has brought the thriving textile town to an unprecedented halt; rich and poor alike crowd the streets, welcoming President Taft to America’s “Spindle City.”Yet as he perches in the grandstand nursing a nagging toothache, Joseph Bartlett straddles the divide between Yankee mill owners and the union bosses who fight them. Bartlett, a renegade owner, fears the town cannot long survive against the union-free South. He frets over the ever-present threat of strikes and factory fires, knowing his own fortune was changed by the drop of a kerosene lantern. When the Cleveland Mill burned, good men died, and immigrant’s son Joseph Bartlett gained a life of privilege he never wanted. Now Joseph is one of the most influential men in a prosperous town. High above the rabble, as he stands among politicians and society ladies, his wife is dying, his sons are lost in the crowd facing pivotal decisions of their own, and the differences between the haves and have-nots are stretched to the breaking point.Spindle City delves deep into the lives, loves, and fortunes of real and imagined mill owners, anarchists, and immigrants, from the Highlands mansions to the tenements of the Cogsworth slum, chronicling a mill town’s—and a generation’s—last days of glory.

Book Spindle City: A Novel Review :

I tend to save all of my fiction reading for the summer, which means I pick my books carefully before setting off with the author across hundreds of pages. Burrello, a true craftsman at the line level, did not disappoint. Spindle City follows a mill owner in Fall River in the late 19th Century and his sons and extended network of workers and friends. I admit in the first 50 pages or so I had trouble keeping track of all of the characters, but then the author starts to stretch out, lean into his prose and plot, and the book gains an addictive momentum. I sensed that the writer cared deeply about every detail, right down to the type of pocket watch a gentleman might own at that time, and about developing characters piece-by-piece through dialogue and action. The end result: a lot of the prose feels almost like a painting, as the sensory detail, the micro actions of the men and women, and dialogue combine to bring us into a manufacturing culture in flux, and, later, a nation at war in Europe. If you buy Spindle City, be patient, take the time to get into the book, and you'll be rewarded by a rich novel worthy of the best quiet hours of summer.
Author Jotham Burrello is a master of telling details. So it is a gift to lovers of historical fiction that he has chosen to tell this story of the early 1900s in Fall River, Massachusetts. It is a time of prosperity in this thriving textile town. The novel begins with workers, mill owners, and residents alike reveling in their good fortune, awaiting President Taft. You will see, hear, smell, taste, and touch every detail. As the novel progresses, we learn the history of mill owner Joseph Bartlett, his family, and those in the world he inhabits. We learn of his triumphs and regrets as he deals with pummeling guilt, as throbbing as the toothache that torments him. There’s mystery here, love, and tragedy all told with almost filmic sweep. Burrello has been compared to E. L. Doctorow, with merit, but in this novel, he claims his own place in the genre of historical fiction.
